Political leaders and student bodies in Jammu and Kashmir have condemned the alleged assault of a student from Poonch district, studying in Madhya Pradesh, after he reportedly participated in a Navratri Garba event. The victim, Aftaab Hussain, is enrolled at Dr Hari Singh Gour University in Madhya Pradesh.

Reacting strongly, Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdi said he was attacked by individuals allegedly affiliated with Hindu Jagran Manch, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and groups linked to the BJP. “A Kashmiri student from Poonch was thrashed for simply joining Navratri festivities. The attackers are alleged to be part of the BJP-RSS ecosystem. If Kashmiri students aren’t even allowed to participate in your events, what does ‘Sabka Saath’ really mean? This exposes the deeply communal and anti-national character of these groups,” said Mehdi.

The J&K Students Association also issued a statement condemning the assault. Its national convenor, Nasir Khuehami, urged the Madhya Pradesh DGP to ensure Aftaab’s safety, provide medical care, and take strict legal action against the perpetrators.

He added, “Navratri is a sacred festival symbolising devotion, inclusivity, and the triumph of good over evil. It is deeply disturbing that fringe elements are weaponising religion to harass and demonise a Kashmiri Muslim student, giving a communal twist to what is fundamentally a spiritual and cultural celebration.”
