As guns fall silent along the borders following a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, political leaders and legislators have begun visiting frontier villages that witnessed devastation in recent days due to heavy shelling by Pakistan.

Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, along with several party leaders, visited Uri town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday.Mufti posted on X that Uri, once a vibrant town, is “now eerily quiet, like a ghost town.”

“Its streets are empty, its people displaced, many injured and in hospitals, families crammed into shelters, with no place left to call home. Uri, once envisioned as a gateway to peace and a hub of economic activity, now lies in ruins,” she said.

She added, “One can only hope that the fragile ceasefire is upheld and strengthened by both India and Pakistan, so that such human suffering is never repeated,” Mufti added.

Meanwhile, Uri MLA Sajjad Shafi has intensified efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Sub Division Uri.

A party statement said Shafi conducted a comprehensive visit to several affected areas to assess the ground situation and provide immediate relief.

The MLA announced several key measures, including the sanctioning of new ambulances for Uri to ensure swift transportation of the injured, relief packages for displaced and affected families in temporary shelters and deployment of additional doctors along with the supply of essential medicines to hospitals and health centres.

Addressing local residents, Shafi assured, “I am with my people in this hour of need. Every effort will be made to save every human life and restore normalcy in the region.”

He also recommended the establishment of community bunkers in border areas of Uri to ensure civilian safety during cross-border tensions.

Senior National Conference (NC) leader and MLA from Trehgam, Saifullah Mir, also visited shelling-affected areas on Sunday to assess the situation and express solidarity with residents.

During the visit, the MLA interacted with locals, listened to their concerns and assured them of swift government action to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) said on Sunday that it has deployed teams to support communities affected by recent cross-border shelling in Jammu and Kashmir.

The party said the shelling has caused significant damage and loss of life, particularly in areas such as Karnah, Nowgam, Uri, Chowkibal, Machil, Jamgund and other nearby regions.

A party statement said the teams, comprising volunteers and medical staff, are on the ground providing essential supplies and assisting displaced families.
