As Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with the aftermath of devastating flashfloods and torrential rains, political tensions have escalated, with parties engaging in a war of words over the government’s handling of the disaster.
Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma, launched a scathing attack on the NC-led J&K government during a press conference at the party headquarters in Jammu on Tuesday. He accused the administration of demonstrating a “lack of seriousness and inadequate response,” describing the relief measures as “lip service and eyewash.”
Sharma further alleged that the government displayed “step-motherly” treatment towards the Jammu region. “Despite having full control over essential departments such as electricity and water supply, the administration failed to act with urgency,” he said.
Highlighting the role of his own party, Sharma stated, “BJP leaders and MLAs have stood shoulder to shoulder with the people, actively participating in rescue and relief operations. This is not a favour, but our duty.” He also praised the Union Government and the Lieutenant Governor’s administration for their “prompt and committed response,” citing the timely rescue efforts during the Mata Vaishno Devi route tragedy.
Meanwhile, a political storm was triggered after photographs went viral showing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah standing behind officials while Union Home Minister Amit Shah was being briefed during his recent visit to flood-affected areas in Jammu. The images sparked debate over the protocol extended to the elected head of the Union Territory.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti took to social media platform X to express dismay: “Deeply unfortunate that the protocol extended to Chief Ministers was conspicuously missing in Jammu yesterday. Politics aside, he is an elected CM who represents all of us. A little more grace and magnanimity wouldn’t hurt.”
Several users and political leaders shared the viral photos, noting that BJP MLAs were seen walking alongside the Home Minister, while Omar Abdullah was positioned in the rear.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik also reacted sharply, posting: “Dear Omar Abdullah, you were advised by Arvind Kejriwal never to trust BJP. At least have some self-respect and take a stand for your people instead of running behind them like a shadow. J&K needs leaders with courage, not protocol-hungry showpieces.”
Meanwhile, J&K Congress Working President Raman Bhalla termed Amit Shah’s visit to the flood-affected region a “damp squib”. “The Home Minister’s visit was hyped by the BJP, raising hopes among flood-affected communities,” Bhalla said. “But it ended in deep disappointment. No relief package or concrete measures were announced. People felt completely betrayed and let down.”
