Leh, December 5
The Project Himank of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Thursday celebrated its 35th Raising Day.
On this day in 1985, the project came into existence and was entrusted with the vital task of the construction of the road infrastructure in Ladakh.
The Project Himank has been at the forefront of road, airfields and bridge construction activities both along the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control with China.
At present, it is looking after the construction of more than 1,700 km of road network and maintenance of Leh and Thoise airfields. Important passes under the Project Himank are Umling La (19,300 feet), Chang La (17,300 feet), Marsimik la (18,300 feet) and Tanglang La (17,552 feet).
Chief Engineer Brig Nitin K Sharma paid homage to the martyrs at the Himank Memorial here.
Brigadier Sharma highlighted the contribution of the GREF personnel in taking forward the road development activities in the border areas of Ladakh.
He emphasised that the “Mountain Tamers” as they are called, had never been deterred by inhospitable terrain, hostile weather conditions and freezing temperatures in attaining the laid down goals and targets.
He expressed confidence that the project with focused approach and sincere dedication would continue to play a pivotal role in developing road infrastructure and contribute in both social and economic uplift of Ladakh.
