Traders of the Karan Nagar area today urged the government to replace defunct streetlights in the marketplace.

Traders Federation Karan Nagar president Ajaz Shahdhar said the authorities were presently installing new streetlights across the city but Karan Nagar was being ignored.

“Streetlights have been installed at several places but Karan Nagar is being ignored. Karan Nagar is an important marketplace and its road also leads to hospitals like Sri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) and Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura. Unfortunately, most of the streetlights of the area are defunct and the entire area reels under darkness in the evening. The defunct LED and high pressure sodium vapour (HPSV) lights need to be replaced,” Shahdhar said.

He said both commuters and shoppers were being inconvenienced as a result and that the government should immediately address their concerns.

“Customers avoid shopping during evening hours due to defunct streetlights that affects the business. Traders have already suffered huge losses in the recent past and defunct streetlights are adding to our woes,” said Shahdhar.

“As per reports of the agreement among Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL), Power Development Department (PDD) and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), the entire Srinagar city is getting new streetlights. We hope the Karan Nagar market areas, too, get new lights soon,” he added.
