Srinagar/ Anantnag, March 26

As the government has ordered strict restrictions in the summer capital till April 15, residents are complaining of a shortage of essentials. They claim that grocery shops were shut at several places.

“For the past two days, I have unable to find any open grocery store in our area. Though I managed to buy vegetables from a roadside vendor in the wee hours today, chicken and mutton shops too are shut,” said Pervez Ahmad, a resident of Rawalpora.

Residents of other places like Jawahar Nagar too complained that groceries were shut and essential items were hard to procure.

“Though the road was barricaded, I was allowed to move when I said I wanted to buy groceries. However, I could not find any grocery shop open....though I could get vegetables from a hawker, all mutton and chicken shops were also shut,” said a resident of Jawahar Nagar.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Shahid Choudhary the district administration had put in place a mechanism to ensure uninterrupted supplies and deliveries of essential services to the general public of the district. He said essential commodities will be ‘home-delivered to residents as part of this mechanism’.

In a tweet, he said ration would be home-delivered from Saturday. “Home-delivery of PDS ration to 1.60 Lakh families in #Srinagar will start from 28th March under strict safety-protocol. Deptts of Food, Agri, Police along with Magistrates, SRTC, SMC and volunteers included. Pl #StayAtHome and #BreakTheChain. Spread the word,” he tweeted.
