The security forces on Tuesday launched simultaneous search operations at 23 locations across the mountainous areas of Jammu division, where terrorists are suspected to be hiding.

The Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, along with the Army and CRPF, initiated the operations early in the morning in Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur, Kathua, and Reasi districts, those areas that have seen increased terror activities in recent years.

Intelligence agencies have received reports suggesting that the recent lull in terrorist activities could be attributed to militants regrouping in the forests of Jammu region, where they are reportedly receiving fresh weaponry and ammunition.

Recently, the police had carried out a crackdown on the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) network in the region, detaining over 50 individuals who were allegedly aiding militants by providing food, logistical support and communication links with their handlers in Pakistan. Authorities have also attached the properties of several terrorists originally from Jammu and Kashmir but operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), targeting their financial channels in the process.

Despite a drop in terrorist activities in Rajouri and Poonch districts in 2024 compared to previous years, a series of incidents in Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Udhampur and Jammu from April-May onwards raised concerns for security agencies.

The search operations are being carried out at 23 locations, including 10 in the Chenab Valley region, comprising Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban, seven in the Rajouri-Poonch belt, three in Udhampur, two in Reasi, and one in Jammu district. Officials confirmed that the simultaneous searches were initiated following directions from the Union Home Ministry.
