Srinagar leads in implementing SMILE scheme

Srinagar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat visited the newly established Rehabilitation Home for persons engaged in begging at Hawal to assess the facilities and measures in place for their rehabilitation. He was accompanied by the Chief Planning Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, Tehsildar Eidgah, members of NGOs, and other officials.

During his visit, the DC took a detailed tour of the Rehabilitation Home and interacted with staff to discuss the initiative. He highlighted that the SMILE scheme is designed to provide vocational training and livelihood opportunities for individuals engaged in begging, empowering them to become self-sufficient.

The DC emphasised a holistic approach to address the issue, focusing on social reintegration and the well-being of marginalised individuals. Special provisions will also be made for children found begging, with plans to enroll them in schools to ensure their education and development.

Dr Bilal reiterated the district administration’s commitment not only to eradicate begging but also to provide affected individuals with the necessary support to earn a livelihood with dignity and honour.

He also urged the staff at the Rehabilitation Home to approach their responsibilities with compassion, enabling marginalised individuals to lead meaningful and dignified lives.
