Srinagar records hottest August day in 39 years

Srinagar, August 17

Srinagar city recorded the hottest August day in the last 39 years as the mercury soared to a maximum of 35.7 degrees Celsius on Monday.

“Today’s maximum temperature broke the record of the last three decades,” said Sonum Lotus, Director Meteorological Department, J&K

A Met official said Monday’s maximum temperature was six degrees above normal.

Earlier this month, the summer capital had recorded a maximum of 35.4 degrees Celsius on August 7.

Incidentally, Srinagar remained hotter than Jammu as the winter capital recorded a maximum of 32.1 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at 21.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the border town of Kupwara remained the hottest place in the Valley, recording a maximum of 36.7 degrees Celsius. The tourist resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest at 26.2 degrees Celsius.

The Met office here had announced the arrival of monsoon on June 24. However, the Valley since then has mostly witnessed dry weather conditions amid soaring temperatures.

The weatherman has forecast mainly dry weather conditions across Kashmir in the next 24 hours. However, Jammu is expected to receive scattered to moderate rainfall.
