Jammu, May 25

Often being called underperformers, students of government schools in the Jammu division have proved their critics wrong by doing better than their counterparts from private schools in an online quiz competition.

The competition was recently organised by the Directorate of School Education, Jammu. As many as 10,196 entries were received from both government and private school students. Of them, 6,080 students were from government schools and 4,120 from private schools. The competition was organised between two groups — Group-I (Class VI to VIII) and Group-II (Class IX to XII).

“My friends studying in private schools were of the view that government school students are not intelligent but that thinking has changed after I excelled in the quiz competition,” said Aditi Sharma, a Class VIII student of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Chanderkote, Ramban.

“Not just participation, students of government schools have secured positions which will boost the morale of heads of the institutions,” said Santosh Chib, warden, KGBV, Chanderkote.

“As compared to plain districts, the 2G Internet connectivity was not that good but still the students were determined to register for the online competition to challenge the age-old thinking of people that government schools students lag behind in academics and extracurricular activities,” said another government school student.

Separate results for government and private schools were declared by the directorate. The top 10 students were decided on the basis of the highest marks and time of submission in the competition. All meritorious candidates will get an appreciation letter from the directorate and awards when the schools reopen.
