Srinagar, February 3
Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has conducted 30,000 to 40,000 late-night inspections to curb power theft in the past two months. KPDCL Managing Director Mussarat Zia said these inspections, covering every corner of the Valley, were conducted with an objective to root out illegal power connections and prevent power thefts.
With the onset of winter last November, night patrols and rigorous inspections were intensified across the Valley in response to a surge in incidents causing disruptions and transformer damage. During the drive, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited even resorted to publicising images of properties involved in power theft. At the same time, it also faced criticism for “shaming” people than focusing on curbing power theft.
According to Zia, winter months see a rise in power thefts as people use appliances like boilers and steamers. Instances of covert installations, such as heater coils inside water tanks, were also detected during these late-night inspections. He said he would ensure genuine consumers aren’t put at disadvantage. He also laid stress on the importance of consumer awareness through social media outreach.
According to the KPDCL Managing Director Mussarat, the monitoring is focused on benefiting genuine consumers and curbing power theft would continue. He said supplies are being provided from 33 feeders, with aspirations to extend this coverage to at least 100 in the near future.
