Ram Kumar, Commandant, 38 Battalion, CRPF, Smailpur, flagged off a tour of 23 children of various government schools of rural areas in Samba district from its headquarters under the civic action programme. Ram Kumar addressed the selected students and told them that such programmes organised by the CRPF commensurate with the public-friendly image of the force. All the students will be taken to Kolkata and they will interact with the Governor of West Bengal, Inspector General of Police (IGP), CRPF, and Commissioner of Police.

Schools adopted under CSR

Moving forward on its commitment to improve the lives of local communities, particularly children, India’s largest science-based Ayurveda company Dabur India Ltd on Thursday announced the expansion of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) drive in Jammu with the adoption of three government schools. It has pledged to improve the overall infrastructure in these three schools in Jammu this year.

Calligraphy competition

Pushp Vatika on Thursday organised a calligraphy competition for students. Tiny tots of the playway school wrote letters. The competition helped them to explore and learn more. Later, prizes were also distributed by incharge Sushma Sharma and co-incharge Ayushi sharma. Sushma sharma encouraged other students to do better to win prizes.

Student bags gold in fencing

Fencer Shreya Gupta, a Class X student of Presentation Convent school, Jammu, has brought laurels to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by clinching an individual gold in the ongoing 16th Cadet (U-17) National Fencing Championship being held in Hyderabad. By winning the gold medal, Shreya has created history in fencing nationals by claiming three consecutive National Cadet Championship titles. On the journey to her third title in a row, in the quarterfinals, Shreya defeated Priyu V of Kerala by 15-7 in a nail-biting finish.

Teachers protest

The J&K ReT Teachers’ Forum under the leadership of its president Vinod Sharma held a protest against the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). A large number of teachers gathered outside the Press Club and shouted slogans against the IGNOU authorities. Vinod Sharma alleged due to mismanagement of IGNOU authorities, two papers had been cancelled and examination centres were fixed only at the district headquarters which had forced the teachers from far-flung areas to travel long distances to reach the centres. Others who protested included Sukhdev Singh Sumbria, Gulzabir Daing, Rajesh Jamwal, Sham Sharma, Surjit Singh, Manzoor Khan, Surinder Khajuria, Balbir Bhagat, Subash Chander, Pankaj Verma and Balwan Singh.

Faculty development programme

The School of Computer Science and Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, in collaboration with Education through Information and Communication Technology, MHRD, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee, organised a faculty development programme on Deep Learning and Machine Learning Applications. More than 60 participants from various institutions, faculty members and research scholars participated in the programme.

Student wins bronze medal

Aman Sharma, a Class 12 student of J&K Police Public School, Miran Sahib, has bagged a bronze medal in the U-19 age group in the recently concluded 65th National School Games Yug-Mun-Do Championship organised by the School Games Federation of India at Durg, Chhattisgarh. Chairperson, Police Wives Welfare Association, Rubinder Kaur, congratulated Aman Sharma for winning the medal.

CUJ holds seminar

The Swami Vivekananda Chair of the Central University of Jammu (CUJ) on Thursday organised a national seminar on the occasion of birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The topic of the seminar was ‘Emergence of New India: Philosophy and Teaching of Swami Vivekananda’. The inaugural session was chaired by Prof Ashok Aima, CUJ Vice Chancellor.
