Train compartment catches fire at Qazigund, no one hurt
Srinagar, January 25
A vacant compartment of a passenger train, which was stationed at the Qazigund railway station in south Kashmir, caught fire on Thursday due to an apparent ‘short circuit’ in the engine, according to Railway officials.
The incident occurred when the train (09760), en route from Budgam to Banihal, came to a stop at the railway station. “Prima facie, a short circuit in the engine triggered the incident. Smoke began emanating from the compartment, which was promptly extinguished,” officials said, adding that there were no injuries.
The train was unoccupied at the time of the incident. “The investigation is underway, and the exact cause of the fire remains inconclusive,” officials added. “The inquiry into the incident is pending,” the official said. Rail traffic on the Baramulla-Banihal track has been restored.
