Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday strongly criticised the spread of false narratives on social media, likening them to propaganda disseminated by terror outfits such as The Resistance Front (TRF).

“Some divisive elements are trying to spread fake narratives similar to those propagated by terror groups like TRF. This poses a serious threat and must be countered by the public,” Sinha said while addressing a gathering of the Pahari tribal community in Srinagar.

He warned that misinformation can cause significant harm. “If TRF’s social media posts echo the same statements some people are making publicly, that’s a dangerous alignment,” he noted.

Highlighting national progress in curbing terrorism, the L-G stated, “Terrorism has been significantly reduced across the country. The North-East is now largely free from terror, and left-wing extremism is confined to a few districts. I am confident it will be eradicated in the coming months.”

Sinha also emphasised the Central Government’s commitment to empowering tribal communities, including the decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Pahari ethnic groups.

“Empowering tribal communities is a top priority. Their development is integral to the nation’s inclusive growth agenda,” he said, assuring that the rights of Paharis under the new legislation will be fully protected.

He called on tribal groups and all communities to unite against terrorism and actively resist extremist propaganda to maintain peace and stability.

The event was attended by several prominent Pahari leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, former MLC and Pahari Welfare Society Chairman Zafar Iqbal Manhas, and Raja Aijaz Ali, Chairman of the Pahari Culture and Welfare Forum, among others.
