New Delhi, January 16

The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday formed a tribunal under Delhi High Court Judge Sachin Datta to adjudicate on the status of banned Kashmir-based outfits Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Muslim League and assess if there was sufficient ground for them to be notified as unlawful associations.

Muslim League of Masarat Alam and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, founded by pro-Pakistan separatist leader late Syed Ali Shah Geelani, were declared unlawful bodies on December 27 and 31 (2023), respectively, under Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for five years.

While imposing the ban on Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, the Union Home Ministry had said it was known for its involvement in fomenting terrorism and anti-India propaganda for fuelling the secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The outfit’s objective was to separate Jammu and Kashmir from India and establish Islamic rule in Jammu and Kashmir, it said.

The ministry said the leaders and members of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat had been involved in raising funds through various sources, including Pakistan and its proxy organisations, for perpetrating unlawful activities, including supporting terrorist activities and sustained stone-pelting on the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
