Two killed in road accident on J&K national highway
Two people lost their lives in a road accident near the Navyug Tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials said on Wednesday. According to officials, the accident occurred around 8:40 pm on Tuesday when a vehicle traveling toward Srinagar lost control, crashing into a divider and a police barrier near the tunnel. Initial reports suggest that over speeding may have been the cause of the crash. A police official confirmed that five people, including a Special Police Officer (SPO), sustained injuries in the accident. The injured were initially rushed to the Emergency Hospital in Qazigund for treatment and later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) in Anantnag.
However, two individuals from Shopian district succumbed to their injuries. One of the deceased, identified as Zubair Ahmad Wani, was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The second victim, Mushtaq Ahmad Dalal, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The police have registered a case and an investigation into the incident is underway. This marks the second major accident near the Navyug Tunnel in recent days. Earlier, a road transport corporation (RTC) bus overturned inside the tunnel, leaving 17 people, including the driver, injured. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution while driving on the highway, particularly in and around the tunnel area, where multiple accidents have been reported.
