The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday witnessed a brief uproar after BJP MLA Shagun Parihar alleged that her constituency, Kishtwar, was being neglected because “nationalist Hindus” reside there.

As the Zero Hour began, MLA Parihar stated, “In Kishtwar, we are Rashtrawadi Hindus (nationalist Hindus) and we are being neglected; no work is being done.”

Her remarks drew immediate objections from members on the treasury benches, several of whom rose to protest the statement, leading to a brief commotion in the House.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary intervened, saying that Jammu and Kashmir is known for its hospitality and brotherhood across communities.

“Everyone here is a patriot. The Honorable MLA has used some words, but let me clarify—there are not only nationalist Hindus in Kishtwar, Doda, or the Chenab Valley. Everyone there, regardless of religion, is a nationalist working for the strength of the nation,” he said.

Minister Javid Dar also responded, asserting that the government does not function on religious lines. “We work equally for all people. Such remarks are communal in nature and should be expunged from the record,” he said.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather urged the BJP MLA to exercise caution in her choice of words. “You have come to this House for the first time. Please choose your words carefully and avoid controversial statements. You have a long way to go, and we want you to progress,” the Speaker advised.

Later, speaking to mediapersons, MLA Shagun Parihar said her intention had been misinterpreted. “My intention was to seek justice for the people of Kishtwar. The government has a habit of ignoring genuine concerns. I have raised this issue before, but they did not act. If the work had been done, I would not have had to say this,” she said.
