Valley receives second spell of precipitation

The second spell of precipitation within a fortnight began across the Kashmir valley on Friday. The region received rainfall overnight and the higher reaches recorded snowfall.

The intermittent rainfall began in the region during the night and intensified during the morning hours. Downpour lashed most parts of the Kashmir valley, including the summer capital here.

An official of the Meteorological Centre here said the plains received light to moderate rainfall and the higher mountainous areas received the second snowfall of the season.

It is the second spell of downpour in the region within a fortnight and follows a major snowstorm last week that had crippled the life across Kashmir valley for days and caused a major electricity outage as transmission networks were badly damaged.

The latest spell of precipitation is expected to last for three days till Sunday and is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall in the plains and heavy snowfall over isolated mountainous areas of the Valley.

The intensity of the latest spell is expected to be lesser than the previous spell. The snowfall last week was one of the heaviest for the month of November as several feet of snow was received in northern meadow resort of Gulmarg and Srinagar, the summer capital, received more than a foot of snowfall.

It is for the second consecutive year that the Kashmir valley has received early spells of precipitation in November, which had gripped the region in a winter chill.

The day temperatures as well as night temperatures across the region, including the city here, have hovered around freezing levels during the past fortnight.
