Voters’ day observed to promote youth participation
On the eve of the 15th National Voters’ Day, an oath-taking ceremony was held at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar, where Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo administered the oath to officers and officials, including the Administrative Secretaries of the Union Territory.
According to an official spokesperson, the participants pledged their commitment to democracy, vowing to ensure independent, impartial and peaceful elections. They also took an oath to cast their votes fearlessly, irrespective of religion, community or language.
This year’s theme, “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure,” remains the same as last year and underscores the importance of voters participating in the electoral process independently and without any bias based on religion, race or language.
National Voters’ Day is celebrated annually on January 25, marking the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which was established in 1950. This year, 2025, marks the 75th anniversary of the ECI’s inception. The day was first observed in 2011 to encourage greater participation of young voters in the electoral process.
The spokesperson emphasised that the primary objective of the EC is to increase voter enrolment, particularly among youngsters who have recently turned 18 and are now eligible to vote.
