UNESCO has announced the addition of Srinagar to its network of creative cities.

Srinagar has been designated as “Creative city of craft and folk arts”, said a UNESCO press note. From India, Srinagar joins Chennai and Varanasi (both UNESCO cities of music), Jaipur (crafts and folk arts), Mumbai (film) and Hyderabad (gastronomy).

The “UNESCO Network” now has nearly 300 cities from 90 countries that invest in culture and creativity to advance sustainable urban development, according to the press note. Worldwide, Srinagar is among the 49 new cities that have joined the “UNESCO Creative Cities Network” (UCCN) following their designation by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

By joining the UCCN, cities commit to sharing their best practices and developing partnerships involving public and private sectors to develop hubs of creativity and innovation. — TNS

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
