Jammu, February 20

At a time when Jammu is witnessing protests by unemployed youth demanding creation of more government jobs and speeding up the process to fill vacancies, several women have come up with startups, generating employment and setting an example for others.

An MBA, Avni Mahajan, who runs a bakery, says she has never tried for a government job. “I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I became home baker because of my interest in it,” says Avni, who bakes 4-5 cakes in a day.

Another entrepreneur, Novika Vij, has a unique startup wherein she trains people in etiquettes, body language, table manners and interview among others. She was a cabin crew member of an aviation company. Later, she left the job to start her own venture.

So far, Novika has given online training to people in 36 countries and also in-person training in schools, hotels and other institutions of Jammu.

Avni provides business to delivery agents and Novika employs digital marketeers for social media campaigns.

Neete Kour, a gymnast, had been a homemaker for years post her marriage in 1996. It was her dream to start a gym exclusively for women in Janipur area of Jammu. “It is mostly the in-laws of a girl who decide her future. After being a housewife for years, I started aerobic classes.

Later, I started a gym where I train women in aerobics, zumba dance and yoga,” she says.

Neete has trained several girls who are now working as physical trainers in different schools of Jammu. “Women should come forward and decide their future. Not getting a government job is not an end of the world. There are several options these days,” Kour adds.
