Following the inauguration of the strategic Sonamarg Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week, officials announced on Saturday that the popular tourist destination is witnessing an increase in visitors and efforts are underway to transform it into a winter sports hub, similar to the renowned Gulmarg skiing resort.

Historically, Sonamarg was cut off from the rest of the region during heavy snowfall. However, the newly inaugurated tunnel, situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, now ensures all-weather connectivity to the destination, which lies on the route to Ladakh.

Gh. Mohd. Bhat, Chief Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority, told The Tribune that initiatives have already been launched to position Sonamarg as a key winter destination. “This year, we are placing more focus on ice skating and skiing courses at the resort. While these activities were offered earlier as well, the new all-weather connectivity will significantly enhance these offerings,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed optimism, stating that in the next five years, Sonamarg would become a winter sports destination comparable to Gulmarg.

Bhat further revealed that a proposal has been made to develop a gondola project from the main Sonamarg bowl to Thajiwas glacier, which he believes will greatly enhance skiing opportunities in the area. “We hope to see a significant increase in winter visitors starting next year,” he added.

Bhat also emphasised that plans are in place to make the destination more accessible and welcoming to skiing enthusiasts. “We are committed to ensure a remarkable rise in visitor numbers in the coming years,” he said.

Rauf Tramboo, president of the Travel Agents Association of Kashmir, expressed confidence in Sonamarg’s future as a major winter tourism hub. “With the tunnel now open and the area’s immense potential for adventure tourism, I am hopeful that Sonamarg will soon undergo a major transformation and become a prominent winter destination,” he said.
