Hoshiarpur, February 19

The police seized 18,000 litres of lahan, nine tarpaulins, two iron drums and three plastic pipes at Begpur village near the Mand area on the banks of the Beas. Under a campaign launched against drug peddlers, the police received a tip-off that a large quantity of illicit liquor was being manufactured by some unknown persons at Begpur village.

Acting on the information, SSP Dhruman H Nimbale constituted a team led by Dasuya sub-division DSP Ranjit Singh and Dasuya SHO and carried out a search operation at the spot. No accused was present there but large quantity of lahan (raw liquor), utensils used in brewing illegal liquor and other items were recovered.

An FIR under Section 61/1/14 of the Excise Act was registered against unidentified persons. The recovered lahan was destroyed in the presence of Excise Inspector Manjit Kaur.

Another team consisting of Mukerian DSP Paramjit Singh, Mukerian police station SHO Inspector Harjinder Singh, Hoshiarpur Circle Incharge ETO Shekhar Garg, Excise Inspector Naresh Sahota and Himachal Pradesh Kangra SHO PS Indora in order to arrest the accused in a case registered on January 28 under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act, conducted search operations at Gangwal and Ulairian village. During the operation, about 1.75 lakh litres of lahan was recovered and destroyed on the spot by the Excise Department. It is apprehended that illicit liquor to be brewed here was to be supplied to various villages during the elections.

Security arrangements up

Hoshiarpur: Keeping in view the upcoming Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, two important changes have been made in the district to strengthen the security arrangements. SSP Hoshiarpur Dhruman H Nimbale said these included use of e-Nakabandi app and installation of digital CCTV cameras at all inter-state and inter-district border sealing points. The footage of these cameras will be live streamed on screens at the centralised control room of the district.
