1 killed, four hurt in Bist Doab Canal bridge crash

A tipper and a car collided on the Bist Doab Canal bridge near Kotfatuhi station on the Mahilpur-Phagwara road at around 5 am on Sunday. Five people in the car were seriously injured, one of whom later died during treatment. The deceased was identified as Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Bhawanipur village under Garhshankar police jurisdiction. The tipper driver fled the scene.

Police at Mahilpur police station took custody of the injured, the vehicles involved, and the deceased’s body, and initiated further investigation. According to eyewitnesses, the tipper was travelling from Bahram to Mahilpur, while the car, driven by Ajay Khepad of Bhawanipur’s Beet area, was heading towards Garhshankar to drop his uncle, Binder Pal, at Amritsar airport.

Car passengers Ajay Khepad, his uncle Binder Pal, friend Sukhwinder Singh, 13-year-old Krishna (son of Chacha), all from Bhawanipur, and Parminder Singh of Hajipur, all seriously injured in the crash.
