Science City organised 17th and 18th All Breed Dog Show on Sunday. Around 150 dogs of 40 breeds including Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Boxer, Pomeranian, Pug, St Bernard, Bullmastiff, Caravan Hound, Rajapalayam Hound, Rampur Hound, Banjara Hound, Santal Hound, Indian Mastiff, Indian Pariah Dog, Himalayan Sheep Dog, Bully Kutta and Pointer participated in the show. The event provided an informative and engaging platform for the general public to learn about the diverse gene pool within domesticated fauna.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Manish Kumar, IFS, Director General, Science City, emphasised on the strong historical bond between domesticated animals and human beings. He said, “Dogs, in particular, play a crucial role in this relationship, contributing to various aspects such as working, sporting, herding, hunting and companionship. Dog shows like these provide a unique opportunity for owners, breeders and pet lovers to showcase their pets and engage with breeders.”
Event coordinator Dr Munish Soin, Scientist, Science City, said, “There is need to bring awareness in society about faunal biodiversity with a focus on salient features of various breeds of dogs. All dogs are part of the same species, but their genes can dictate whether they are Chihuahua or a Great Dane. There can be a lot of variation in genes that make up the genetic diversity of dogs in terms of colours, sizes and shapes.”
Rishya Hemchandra from Bangalore, Harchand Singh from Patiala and NS Aujla from Jalandhar were the jury members for the show.
