16 booked for outraging modesty

Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked sixteen persons on the charge of outraging women’s modesty. Investigating Officer (IO) Puran Singh said the suspects, had been identified as Surjit Singh of Chak Bahmannia village, his brothers Kulwinder Singh and Harjinder Singh, and their thirteen unidentified accomplices. Sachin Sharma, a native of UP, who was presently residing at Chak Bahmannia toll plaza, complained to the police that the suspects used abusive language against him and his female colleagues, assaulted him and threatened all with dire consequences on January 6. The IO said a case was registered against suspects. Raids are were on to nab them. OC

Abetment to suicide: 1 held

Phagwara: The police have arrested Narinder Singh, alias Naresh, a resident of Balmik Mohalla, Ward No. 7, Lohian Khas, for forcing his wife to commit suicide. Investigating officer (IO) assistant sub-inspector Kashmir Singh said the police received information that Sujan Bala, a resident of the same locality, ended her life by strangulating herself. The police initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC on a statement of victim’s sister Nargis. The IO said during investigation it came to the fore that the deceased and her husband always quarrelled with each other as she could not bear a child. The IO said a case was registered against the suspect on the statement of Nargis. OC

Drone, 470-gm heroin recovered

Amritsar: The Border Security Force (BSF) recovered a drone and 470 gm of heroin from Dhanoe Khurd village on the Indo-Pakistan border here on Thursday. Officials said BSF troops conducted a search operation beyond the border fencing at Dhanoe Khurd village and recovered one drone and 470-gm packet suspected to be containing heroin from a field.
