Jalandhar: The Transport and Police Department on Friday jointly challaned 17 vehicles for violating traffic rules in the district. Led by Secretary RTA Dr Nayan, the checking was conducted at the BMC Chowk. During the checking, the team inspected documents of vehicles and challaned 17 vehicles that were found flouting the traffic norms. RTA secretary also said checking at different areas would be a constant feature and the violators would not be spared. She exhorted the people to follow traffic rules as it would help in streamlining traffic system in the city thereby reducing road mishaps. TNS
Woman charged with fraud
Nakodar: The Mehat Pur police have charged a woman with fraud. Investigating office Nirmal Singh said the accused had been identified as Seema Chouhan, wife of late Chaman Lal, a resident of Mehat Pur. Jaskaran Singh, a resident of Khuram Pur village, complained to the Jalandhar (rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) that the accused mortgaged a plot to him for Rs2.6 lakh in 2015, but, later fraudulently sold it further to somebody and did not return his money. The investigation officer said the district attorney (legal) recommended registration of a case against the accused and a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code had been registered. oc
Advisory against late blight
Jalandhar: The Horticulture Department on Friday issued an advisory for potato farmers against late blight disease in the potato crop. Deputy Director Horticulture Department Naresh Kumar said recent changes in the weather were favourable for the spread of late blight disease in the potato crop. He said the first symptoms of late blight appear as small, light to dark green, circular or irregular-shaped water-soaked marks and then these lesions expand rapidly into large, dark brown or black lesions. Kumar also advised farmers that if they see these symptoms in their crop, they must spray fungicides, Ridomil Gold or Curzate M-8 or Sectin 60 WG 700 gm per acre or Equation Pro 200-250 ml per acre and later indofil M-45/ Antracol/Kavach – 700 gm per acre, in interval of 10 days. Bhularai is Block Samiti Chairman
Phagwara: Gurdial Singh Bhularai was unanimously elected Phagwara Block Samiti Chairman in a meeting held here on Friday. The meeting was presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner Gurmit Singh Multani. Block samiti member Resham Kaur was elected vice-chairman of the samiti. OC
Drug peddler arrested
Phagwara: The police have arrested a drug peddler and seized 57 intoxicants from his possession on Thursday. The accused has been identified as Som Nath, a resident of Ludhiana. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. OC
