Nawanshahr: A pacemaker was implanted in a 19-year-old boy, who was suffering from recurrent syncope, a rhythm abnormality of the heart, at a Nawanshahr hospital recently. The boy travelled from Canada to get treated here. The consultant cardiologist said the boy was diagnosed with a rhythm abnormality of heart and was found to have low pulse rate and heart block. He underwent conduction system pacing — a technique in which pacemaker lead is fixed to the left bundle of the heart. The technique prevents development of heart dysfunction (weak heart) which can develop over a long time in case of normal pacemaker implantation, said the doctor. Recurrent syncope refers to a diverse group of conditions where the autonomic nervous system suddenly fails to maintain either the blood pressure or heart rate resulting in insufficient cerebral perfusion and loss of consciousness.
