Jalandhar: 400 participate in sub-junior badminton ranking tourney
Jalandhar, July 7
The Indian Oil Punjab Sub-Junior Badminton Ranking Tournament began on Sunday at Raizada Hansraj Badminton Stadium. The tournament was inaugurated by Jalandhar ADC Major Amit Mahajan.
Providing information about the event, District Badminton Association secretary and former national player Ritin Khanna said the tournament will continue till July 10. He said 400 players from across 20 districts are participating in the tournament. Ten events which include singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories are being organised for U-15 and U-17 age groups.
Ravi Chauhan, certified by the Badminton Association of India, has been appointed as the match controller for the championship.
Addressing the players after inaugurating the tournament, ADC Mahajan said sports helps children improve their self-esteem, social skills and self-confidence. Sports also teaches time management and discipline. Moreover, it also helps students in reducing stress and depression.
He congratulated District Badminton Association secretary Ritin Khanna and his team for successfully organising the tournament.
On the occasion, DBA treasurer Palwinder Juneja, Mukul Verma, Anil Bhatti, Naresh Budhia, Dheeraj Sharma, coach Gagan Ratti, Meena Sharma, Bhaskar Mukherjee and a large number of players and their parents were present.
Former Sports Minister visits stadium
Former Punjab Sports Minister and Sangrur MP Meet Hayer visited Raizada Hansraj Badminton Stadium on Sunday. He is campaigning in favour of AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat for Jalandhar West by-election. Being a sports enthusiast, he took out time from his busy schedule for a game of badminton. District Badminton Association secretary Ritin Khanna showed him the newly built court, air conditioned gymnasium and yoga hall.
