66 Feet Road residents seek closure of STP at Pholariwal

A delegation representing 50,000 families residing on the 66 Feet Road on Thursday met BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill seeking intervention of the Centre over the issue of inaction of the state government over environmental damage and health hazards caused by sewage treatment plant (STP) at Pholariwal.
The delegation led by residents Amit Taneja, Bharat Arora, Dinesh, Kapil Shoor, VD Kapoor, Karan Kharbanda, Rajiv, Ritesh, Nitin and Ajay handed over a representation to Shergill. The residents said they had been consistently protesting against operation of the facility for the past six months but no step has been taken by the local administration. They said to make the matters worst a garbage dump facility had also been proposed at the site.
Residents said they have knocked every door of the local administration, including Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner, MC Commissionar and the Chief Minister. They threatened to go on a massive agitation. The residents are complaining that due to this plant, it had become impossible to breathe and live especially for the kids and elders. The residents said it was completely wrong to allow operation of the STP or any garbage dump facility in a highly populated residential area.
The 66 feet road has become the growing hub of residential and commercial infrastructure and many beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (affordable housing scheme) reside in this area. The dump is being set up on 87 acres.
