Setting the target to reduce the stubble burning incidents by 80 per cent over last year, Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal has ordered SDMs, DSPs and officials from the Agriculture Department and the PPCB to contact farmers in “hot spots” across the district.

The administration has identified 10 hot spot villages Begowal, Faridpur, Lakhan Kalan, Sabuwal, Shahpur Dogran, Kamalpur, Shatabgarh, Talwandi Chodhariya, Tibba and Lakhan ke, where the maximum fire incidents were reported in 2023.

Chairing a meeting of higher officials from various departments here at the DAC, Panchal said, “The administration will encourage farmers at every village to avoid stubble burning and use the residue management machinery to save the environment.”

Urging farmers to play the role of a torch-bearer like they did in the green revolution era, the DC said the progressive farmers must come forward to play the “Vatavaran De Rakhe” (environement protectors) role as the district administration will also felicitate the farmers/villages for no stubble burning.

He also said the administration had constituted district-level and sub-division level monitoring committees, besides appointing cluster officers after every 20 villages, to keep a close watch on stubble burning cases.

The DC also strictly asked Cooperative Department officials to ensure the utilisation of machinery at 83 cooperative societies across the district. He also asked police officials to provide protection, if needed, to staff deputed in the field to curb stubble burning.

He said stubble burning would invite a fine of Rs 2,500 on farmers having land below two acres, Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 for farmers having land between 2 and 5 acres and Rs 15,000 to farmers above 5 acres of land, if found guilty.
