All set for smooth conduct of elections: Phagwara DC

A total of 6.22 lakh voters would decide the fate of 35 candidates who are in fray for four Assembly segments, including Phagwara, Kapurthala, Bholath and Sultanpur Lodhi, on Sunday. The voting will be held at 793 polling booths of the district from 8 am to 6 pm.
Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Deepti Uppal, who oversaw the dispatch of polling parties from various centers, said there were 7,22,305 electors in the district, including 1,91,839 in Phagwara, 1,46,954 in Sultanpur Lodhi, 1,35,245 in Bholath and 1,48,267 in Kapurthala, who would exercise their right to franchise in the polls. She said 3,24,942 male voters, 2,97,332 female voters, including 6,615 teenage voters, and 31 third gender voters would cast their votes on Sunday.
The DC said elaborate arrangements had been made for 4,100 employees drawn from the Centre and state governments, banks and public sector undertakings and similar number of staff from the police department had been assigned various duties for conducting the polls in a free, fair and transparent manner.
She said polling parties had been deployed at all polling booths of the district. “The entire election staff will perform their duties diligently so that people are able to cast their vote independently,” said the DC.
DC Uppal, who along with SSP Dyama Harish, today visited Phagwara Assembly constituency said special arrangements had been made to ensure that polling parties and voters were facilitated at the polling booths. Tents, chairs, potable water, wheelchairs, ramps, social distancing marks, face masks, gloves would also be ensured at the booths.
SSP Dyama said in order to ensure free, fair and peaceful Assembly elections, around 3,200 police and CAPF personnel would keep a strict vigil on the polling day. He said security had also been beefed up with the installation of high security check points. The SSP said flying squad teams and static surveillance teams would keep a close tab on the entire situation.
The DC said the administration had set up 24 model polling booths, 20 pink polling booths and one polling booth especially for the PWD voters.
