A sudden ammonia gas leak at Jain Ice Factory, located near Damoria Bridge on Old Railway Road here, resulted in the death of a 68-year-old migrant worker, Sheetal Singh, today afternoon. Singh had been employed at the factory for only four months.

Three other trapped workers were rescued by emergency response teams and are in stable condition. The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when passersby collapsed, alerting locals who promptly informed the police control room.

Police from Division Number 3 swiftly responded, sealing off the area and diverting traffic. Emergency teams, including three fire tenders and disaster management personnel, contained the situation.

The area remained cordoned off until evening as gas dissipation efforts continued. A formal inquiry has been launched, led by SDM Jalandhar-1, Jai Inder Singh.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Sharma praised the swift response, stating, “Teams brought the situation under control within two hours.” The cause of the leak remains under investigation.
