AR-guided knee replacement offers hope to arthritis patients

Fortis Hospital has recently performed a Total Knee Replacement using Pixee Knee+, an Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence-based navigation system.

The surgery was carried out by Dr Mohit Sharma, Consultant Orthopaedics and Knee Replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Jalandhar. The patient, a 65-year-old woman, had suffered from severe arthritis, chronic pain and limited mobility for over five years.

Having lost hope after conventional treatments provided little relief, even simple daily activities such as climbing stairs or walking short distances had become nearly impossible for her. Using the advanced AR navigation technique, Dr Sharma and his team conducted a precise, minimally invasive knee replacement. Remarkably, the patient was walking within days of the operation and reported a significant reduction in pain.

Pixee Knee+ employs augmented reality to enhance accuracy, improve alignment, and deliver better outcomes for patients undergoing knee replacements. The AR system allows surgeons to visualise the joint in real time during surgery, ensuring implants are positioned with maximum precision.

Dr Sharma said, “Unlike conventional robotic procedures, patients do not require CT scans before surgery, thereby avoiding radiation exposure.”
