In a strong step towards empowering persons with disabilities, the Red Cross Society organised an assistive device distribution camp at the Digital Library in Hoshiarpur. The camp was chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Red Cross Society president Ashika Jain. The event was held under the CSR programme of the Grid Controller of India, with technical support from ALIMCO.
A total of 155 assistive devices, worth about Rs 32 lakh, were distributed to 109 beneficiaries. These included 37 motorised tricycles, 22 regular tricycles, 30 wheelchairs, four CP chairs, two smartphones, an accessible cane, 34 crutches, 20 walking sticks, a rollator, four prosthetic limbs, and several other helpful devices meant to improve mobility and daily living.
DC Ashika Jain emphasised the need to treat persons with disabilities with dignity. “Persons with disabilities are an integral and valuable part of society and deserve not just sympathy, but equal opportunities and respect,” she said.
She said when government departments, social organisations and industry worked together, it gave persons with disabilities the confidence and resources to become self-reliant and move ahead in life. She thanked the Grid Controller of India, ALIMCO, and the Red Cross team for supporting this humanitarian effort.
Assistant Commissioner Oeshi Mandal also addressed the gathering and said, “This camp is not only about distributing equipment but also a major step towards self-reliance, respect, and inclusion for persons with disabilities.”
