Malwinder, a 67-year-old retired Punjabi lecturer from the Education Department, marked a literary milestone in his life with the release of his 10th book, Behar—a collection of poetry named after his granddaughter. The book was launched last month at a literary gathering in Jalandhar.
Hailing from humble beginnings in the village of Chhajjalwaddi, Amritsar, Malwinder’s journey into the world of literature was anything but conventional. “My father was a carpenter. Books were never a part of our lives,” he recalled. “It was my friend, Professor Kulbir Singh, who introduced me to the world of reading. That changed everything.”
Malwinder began exploring literature through articles, Russian novels and poetry, eventually developing a deep and lasting relationship with the written word. His passion led him to pursue higher education—completing a BSc, BEd and later an MA in Punjabi—before joining the Education Department in 1987 as a science master. He was later promoted to Punjabi lecturer.
Though he began writing seriously only in 2002, Malwinder has since authored 10 books, each reflecting his evolving understanding of life, culture and identity. Behar, his latest work, stands out as a deeply personal offering, named after his granddaughter and infused with emotions.
Reflecting on his journey, Malwinder shared, “Whatever I am today, I owe to the art of writing. Books gave me purpose and respect. Wherever I go, I’m greeted with warmth and that’s because of literature.”
The writer is already working on his next project—an insightful exploration of the Punjabi diaspora, particularly in countries like Canada. The upcoming work aims to shed light on the cultural transitions and struggles of Punjabis. His literary works include Gairhazri Paida Di Katha (2002), Bin Sirlekh, Chidhiya Da Pind, Phuljhadi (poetry for children), Sawal Na Kar, Chup De Bahane, among others.
With a long literary career rooted in passion, Malwinder continues to inspire with his words, proving that it’s never too late to follow one’s calling.
