Attached property to be auctioned, says I-T official

The Income Tax Department will soon hold an auction of 23 kanals 18 marlas of land worth Rs 72 lakh at Bhularai village near Phagwara as per the law under the Income Tax Act, 1961. The land was attached by the department on Thursday owing to the violation of the Income Tax rules.

THE CASE

  • The land belonged to Sukhwinder Kaur of Cheherru village who had purchased the land during the 2010-2011 fiscal. During the scrutiny of the case, the woman could not disclose the source of purchasing the immovable property worth Rs72 lakh.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Additional Commissioner (Income Tax) Girish Bali said the land belonged to a village woman, Sukhwinder Kaur of Cheherru village (in tehsil Phagwara) who had purchased the land during the 2010-2011 financial year.

Dr Bali said during the scrutiny of the case, the land purchaser (woman) could not disclose the source of purchasing the immovable property worth Rs 72 lakh. The I-T Department raised a demand of Rs 79 lakh, which included the penalties under the I-T Act. Despite repeated reminders to realise the outstanding amount, the said assessee could not deposit the amount of Rs 79 lakh, so the I-T Department was forced to attach the property. — OC
