Bharat Petroleum Mumbai and Indian Oil Mumbai began their campaigns on a winning note in the 42nd Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, with both teams earning three points each in closely contested league matches on the fourth day of the tournament.
In the first league match of Pool C, Bharat Petroleum Mumbai defeated BSF Jalandhar 2-1. Manpreet Singh opened the scoring for Bharat Petroleum in the 23rd minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead. BSF Jalandhar captain Hatinder Singh equalised in the 41st minute, making it 1-1. However, Manpreet Singh scored his second goal in the 47th minute to secure a 2-1 victory for Bharat Petroleum Mumbai.
The second league match, played in Pool A, saw Indian Oil Mumbai, last year's champions, overcome Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala 5-2. Surdarshan Singh gave Rail Coach Factory an early lead in the 10th minute and the team maintained a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Indian Oil responded quickly in the second half, with Sumit Kumar scoring in the 18th minute to level the score. Affan Yusuf added a second goal for Indian Oil in the 25th minute, followed by Talwinder Singh's penalty corner strike in the 30th minute to make it 3-1.
The tournament continues on October 27, with Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi facing Indian Air Force at 4.30 pm, followed by Indian Railways taking on Army XI at 5.45 pm.
