BJP leader thanks Akal Takht for intervening in hunger strike
In a significant development amid ongoing farmer protests, BJP national farmer leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal expressed his gratitude to Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar, Giani Raghbir Singh, for his timely intervention in persuading farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to end his hunger strike.
Grewal praised the decision to send Giani Sultan Singh to assess Dallewal’s health and initiate dialogue, which helped resolve the critical situation. Despite being a BJP leader, Grewal emphasised his duty as a Sikh, stating, “I am grateful my appeal was heard.”
Grewal also called for clear guidelines from Sri Akal Takht Sahib to discourage hunger strikes within the Sikh community, urging constructive dialogue instead of extreme measures. His intervention led to Prime Minister Narendra Modi convening a secretary-level meeting with farmer representatives to address their concerns. Grewal’s actions reflect a rare alignment between Sikh religious leadership and political figures amidst the ongoing protests in the state.
