Jalandhar: The Regional Passport Office (RPO), Jalandhar, has secured two prestigious awards at the national level on Passport Seva Divas observed on June 24 by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The recognition was conferred during a three-day Regional Passport Officers' (RPO) Conference held in New Delhi from June 23 to 25. The Jalandhar RPO received accolades in two categories - Best Granting Officer awarded to Neeraj, Assistant Superintendent, and Best Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) awarded to seva kendra at Phagwara. Passport issuance surged from 91 lakh in 2014 to 1.46 crore in 2024, underlining enhanced citizen-centric service delivery. tns

Woman caught with 1 kg opium

Phagwara: The Bholath police arrested a woman with one kg of opium near village Bagrian. Addressing a press conference, DSP Karnail Singh stated that the arrest was made following proactive patrolling by SHO Ranjit Singh and his team. As the police party approached the vicinity of Bagrian village, they noticed a woman holding a plastic bag who appeared visibly nervous upon seeing the officers and began walking away hurriedly. Acting on suspicion, the police apprehended the woman with the help of a lady constable. Upon questioning, she identified herself as Amarjit Kaur of Kamarawan village. A search of the plastic bag led to the recovery of one kg opium.A case has been registered, and further legal proceedings have been initiated. oc

Man nabbed under NDPS Act

Phagwara: The police have arrested a person on the charge of selling heroin. Five gram of heroin was recovered from the possession of the accused Kulwant Singh, alias Kanta, of Ajtanni village. The police also arrested him on the charge of brewing and selling illicit liquor. Nine bottles of hooch were seized from his possession. oc

Travel agent arrested

Phagwara: The police have arrested a travel agent for allegedly duping a Nakodar resident of Rs 2 lakh. The accused has been identified as Sahil Hans, a resident of Kakipind village in Jalandhar. Amandeep of Mohalla Santokhgarh, Nakodar, told the police that he had paid Rs 2 lakh to the accused for facilitating his migration abroad. A case under the Punjab Travel Profession Regulation Act was registered against the accused. oc
