In a gesture of compassion and social responsibility, businessman Gagan Singh from Nawanshahr has donated 1.25 acres of land to the NGO ‘Sab Ka Rakha’ for the establishment of a fully dedicated senior citizens’ well-being centre in memory of his late father, Sohan Singh.
The announcement ceremony, held at village Barnala Kalan, Nawanshahr, drew local supporters and dignitaries from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
The upcoming centre aims to become a beacon of hope and compassion, providing a nurturing environment where senior citizens can live with dignity, share experiences and engage in purposeful activities.
Speaking at the event, NGO members highlighted the growing need for elderly care in India. “According to NITI Aayog, seniors currently make up just over 10 per cent of the population and this is projected to rise to 19.5 per cent by 2050. Society must step up to ensure proper care and respect for our elders,” they said.
The name ‘Sab Ka Rakha’, derived from the word Rakha meaning protector, defender and caregiver, reflects the organisation’s mission—to serve as a guardian for those in their golden years.
Once fully operational, the centre will accommodate up to 250 residents, offering free-of-cost services as part of its charitable mandate. Modern software solutions will manage nutrition, medical, and administrative needs efficiently. The facility will also include physical fitness programs, medical resuscitation, and mentally stimulating activities to promote engagement and emotional well-being.
Gurpawan Singh, representing the Sab Ka Rakha team, said, “The Nawanshahr centre will serve as a model for senior living management in India. Our goal is to replicate this initiative nationwide to ensure dignified, compassionate care for the elderly.”
