Campus notes: Exhibition on ‘Sainchi Phulkari’
Apeejay College of Fine Arts organised a three-day workshop on folk art — ‘Sainchi Phulkari’ — in collaboration with Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH). Sudhakar Sharma (former secretary, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi) was present as the chief guest. Manmeet Kaur, who is an artist, researcher and educationist and alumna, was present as the resource speaker and Maj Gen Balwinder Singh (retd), convener of INTACH Punjab State, was present as the special guest. Sucharita Sharma (director, Apeejay Education) said the objective was to introduce the students to the endangered folk art ‘Sainchi Phulkari’ and encourage and motivate them to preserve it. Jahnvi Mehta (BFA semester VIII), who had won the Award of Excellence in Graphic Design Technology at World Skills Competition Lyon 2024, was also honoured.
Inter-College Hospitality Fest
Jalandhar: CT Institute of Hospitality Management hosted Naivedyam 3.0, an inter-college hospitality fest, which witnessed over 150 participants from more than 20 renowned institutions. The event featured a range of exciting competitions, including hunky brains, crisp the crushed, mocktails mixology, innovative baked dessert and Indian food fiesta. In the baked Indian dessert competition, Lovely Professional University bagged the first spot, followed by AIHM Chandigarh and Krystal Cooking Classes. Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University won the hunky brains contest, with IHM-Meerut bagging the second spot and GNA University securing the third position. PCTE Group of Institutions secured the first rank in crisp the crushed, while Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University and AIHM-Chandigarh stood second and third, respectively. In mocktails mixology, Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University stood first, with Gulzar Group of Institutes securing the second rank and AIHM-Chandigarh ranking third. In the Indian food fiesta, AIHM-Chandigarh won the first rank, followed by Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University and Krystal Cooking Classes.
‘Talent carnival–2024’
Jalandhar: HMV Collegiate Senior Secondary School organised ‘Talent carnival-2024’ to enhance and amplify the talent of young students. The chief guest of the event was Navroop Kaur, faculty member and dean (youth welfare). Seema Marwaha, dean (academics) and school coordinator, and Arvinder Kaur School, co-coordinator, welcomed the guest. In the declamation contest, Hargun Kaur of SSC 2 (commerce) bagged the first position while Arshdeep Kaur of SSC 2 (humanities) got the second position. In poem recitation, Arshdeep Kaur of SSC 2 Arts and Nancy SSC 2 Commerce jointly secured first position. The quiz competition was presided over by Binoo Gupta, dean (student welfare), in which Tanvi of SSC 1 attained the first position, Sanghya Randev secured the second position and Palak Jaiswal of SSC 2 (medical) secured the third position. In the mehndi-designing competition, Janvi of SSC 2 (commerce) secured the first position, Bhavna of SSC 1 (humanities) secured the second spot and Garima of SSC 1 (commerce) bagged the third position.
Vigyan Jyoti Programme
Jalandhar: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya has been announced as the knowledge partner in the Vigyan Jyoti Programme, an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The programme includes mentoring students, hosting science camps and workshops, offering career counselling and facilitating interactions with women role models. By leveraging its academic resources and expertise, KMV will contribute significantly to overcoming barriers in STEM fields for girls. This partnership will also help improve gender balance in the science and technology sector, aligning with the broader goals of the Vigyan Jyoti Programme. Principal Atima Sharma Dwivedi expressed her enthusiasm about this new role. Neetu Verma from the PG department of physics will serve as the nodal officer, who will coordinate these activities.
Eco-friendly Ganesha competition
Jalandhar: Innocent Hearts Group organised an online ‘Create eco-friendly Ganesha’ contest, wherein students showcased their artistic talent and creativity, promoting environmental conservation. The competition aimed to raise awareness about environmental protection. Participants used eco-friendly materials such as clay, natural colours, newspaper and recycled materials to create attractive idols of Lord Ganesha. A total of 156 entries were received and the top six entries were awarded. Four students from Green Model Town were felicitated by CSR director Palak Gupta Bowry, deputy director (cultural affairs) Sharmila Nakra and principal Rajeev Paliwal. Two students from Kapurthala Road were awarded. The winners received a cash prize of Rs 1,100, certificates and a tealight candle holder.
Sanitary pads distributed
Jalandhar: As a part of their pan India CSR initiative, Niine Private Limited, Gorakhpur, distributed sanitary pads among students and faculty members of GNDU. They also addressed the students regarding the need of menstrual hygiene awareness. They said lack of information about menstruation led to unhygienic and unhealthy menstrual practices and created misconceptions and negative attitudes, which motivated shaming, bullying, and even gender-based violence among others. Rupam Jagota, associate dean of the campus, said poor menstrual health and hygiene was leading to social and economic inequalities, negatively impacting their education, health, safety and human development. Namarta Joshi, Varinder Singh, Deep Kamal, Charan Kamal Walia and others were also present.
