  • Jalandhar Cantt was declared the winner of the Swachhta Survekshan-2020 conducted by the Ministry of Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. But apart from cleanliness, it has much more to flaunt.
  • The Cant Board bagged the top spot among 62 cantonments across the country, improving its rank from 12th in the last survey.
  • The cantonment is spread in an area of 15.2 sq km and is one of the oldest cantonments in India, the construction of which started in 1848 after the first Anglo-Sikh War, when the British settled in northern India. The departure of the British and the subsequent Partition changed the strategic importance of the cantonment on the account of its nearness to the border with Pakistan.
  • It was on March 1, 1950, that the Vajra Corps or the XI Corps of the Indian Army was raised here. It became a part of the Western Command.
