Check-post set up at Law Gate to improve safety

In an effort to curb public nuisance and maintain order near Lovely Professional University (LPU), a group of concerned PG (paying guest) accommodation owners and local residents have voluntarily set up a check-post at the entrance of Law Gate, Maheru.

The initiative, led by Gurinder, a resident of Ladhewali in Jalandhar district, has been operational for the past five to six days and is being hailed as a positive step towards community-led safety.

Speaking to the media, Gurinder explained that the main goal of the check-post is to discourage unnecessary gatherings and prevent miscreants from loitering in the Law Gate area, which attracts a large number of students and visitors. He emphasised that the volunteers manning the post were simply checking identity cards to ensure that only genuine residents, students, and visitors entered the area, thus promoting a safer environment.

While the check-post has not been officially authorised by the police, it has received support from several local stakeholders who appreciate the self-regulation initiative. Residents and PG owners backing the move believe it is essential for maintaining discipline and preventing anti-social elements from disrupting the peace, particularly during late-night hours.

Though there have been reports of some friction between passers-by and the volunteers over ID checks, supporters argue that the intention is not to harass but to encourage responsible conduct in the densely populated and student-centric area.

With many parents sending their children to PGs near LPU, community-driven initiatives like this are being seen as a positive sign of accountability and social responsibility.

While questions have been raised about the legal status of a privately run check-post, community members are urging the administration to recognise the intent behind the move and consider collaborating with local residents to formalise such efforts. Several PG owners have even suggested a joint mechanism with police involvement to ensure both legality and effectiveness.

The local administration is aware of the situation, and further discussions or official guidelines on such community-led safety measures may follow. For now, the check post at Law Gate stands as a symbol of civic responsibility, reflecting the community’s willingness to contribute to public welfare in the absence of immediate official presence.
