In a bid to enhance public safety and curb reckless driving, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police conducted a special night-time drive to curb drunken driving and drinking at public places.

The operation, held between February 8 and February 12, targeted key areas known for high instances of liquor consumption in vehicles. The drive was held between 8 pm and 11 pm under the supervision of Nirmal Singh, ACP, (Central), and Sirivennela, ACP, Model Town.

The primary focus areas included New Grain Market and Boota Mandi, where police teams actively monitored and penalised violators.

The operation was spearheaded by the SHO, Division Number 2, with coordinated efforts of the traffic police, Emergency Response Squad (ERS) and the Field Media Team (FMT).

Officials inspected drivers of 262 vehicles, utilising breath analysers to detect alcohol consumption. Public drinking around liquor shops and ahatas (taverns) was also closely monitored to prevent disorderly conduct. The police emphasised that the drive was part of a broader effort to promote responsible behaviour and ensure safer roads for all commuters.

During the course of the operation, the police issued 33 challans for various violations. Of these, 10 challans were issued for drinking and driving, reinforcing the zero-tolerance policy against motorists in inebriated state.

Besides, five drivers were challaned as their vehicles did not have proper registration number plates, while seven were penalised for not wearing helmets. Eight challans were issued for triple riding on two-wheelers, a dangerous practice that significantly increases the risk of accidents. Furthermore, three vehicles without valid documentation were impounded during the drive.

Jalandhar Police officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining road safety and preventing traffic violations. They said such enforcement drives would be conducted regularly to instil a sense of responsibility among motorists and pedestrians alike. They also urged residents to follow traffic rules, warning that strict action would be taken against those indulging in negligent or unlawful behaviour.
