College holds contests on forest conservation

Phagwara, January 24

The NSS department of MLU DAV College, Phagwara, organised competitions on ‘forest conservation’ in the seminar hall of the collegehere today. The competitions comprised of speeches, poster making and slogan writing.

Slogans written by the participants were later displayed on the college campus. The NSS volunteers acquainted the students with the importance of forests. They said forest conservation involved the upkeep of the natural resources within a forest that were beneficial for both humans and the ecosystem. They apprised the audience of ways with which we all could conserve our forest resources. Control over forest fire, reforestation and afforestation, check over forest clearance for agricultural and habitation purposes, protection of forests, proper utilisation of forests and its products will help in saving the forests. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change.

Principal Dr Kiranjeet Randhawa said: The forests are called the lungs of environment. The most important function of forests is that it produces mass amounts of oxygen. Oxygen is the main respiratory gas for all animals and humans as it ensures our survival

Republic Day function

MLU DAV College also organised a function on the college premises to mark the Republic Day. The programme began with the speech of college principal Dr Kiranjeet Randhawa . She apprised the students of the importance of the day.

She said it was the date when the constitution of India came into effect. It was this day when the country’s transformation towards becoming independent had begun. It has been seventy years since India became a republic and it is a moment of pride that our nation has made a mark on the global map in almost all streams of popularity added the principal.Students presented cultural items. Everyone sang ‘National Anthem’ and paid homage to the National flag.
