The District Congress Committee handed over a memorandum to the District Magistrate in the name of the Governor against the land pooling policy of the Punjab Government.
Congress district president Arun Dogra Mikki, former minister Sunder Sham Arora, former MLA Pawan Adia, former chairman Sarwan Singh and Urban Congress president Navpreet Raihal, besides Rajneesh Tandon, Puneet Sharma, councillor Ashok Mehra, PS Mann, District Bar Association president PS Ghuman, secretary Navjinder Singh Bedi and vice president Vikram Singh were also present on the occasion.
Mikki demanded that the Punjab Government’s decision to acquire more than 50,000 acres of cultivable land of farmers in the state should be cancelled with immediate effect. He said, “This decision is fatal for both the environment and farmers.”
Congress leaders said Punjab was an agriculture-based state. They said this policy would affect the state’s economy. They said the policy was made by the AAP for its own big builders and industrialists.
“Most farmers have small land holdings. This policy will cause them huge losses. Whenever such a policy is to be implemented, social audit is done in villages. Panchayats are taken into loop, but in this case no such process was followed. No talks were held with land owners,” they said.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate assured Congress leaders to send memorandum to the Governor.
