Cong urges govt to airlift Indian students stranded abroad

Jaiveer Shergill, spokesperson of Indian National Congress, through a press release has expressed his concerns over problems being faced by Indian students stuck at airports abroad due to coronavirus, and said the government should take immediate steps to bring them back.

He said as per Ministry of External Affairs, nearly 20,000 foreign nationals had been evacuated to different parts of the world by the Indian Government on request of various nations. However, no action has been taken by the Central Government bringing Indian students stuck abroad at different airports.

“As many as 300 students are stranded in Heathrow Airport as on March 18, while many others at Philippines, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and other countries. Why the BJP government at the Centre not according same helpful treatment to them”, he asked.

He further said when the UK and the US are sending special flights to evacuate their citizens stuck in India, and Air India can be deployed to send German nationals and other foreigners back to their home countries, then why not Air India being used for children of India.

“The MEA should give a definitive reply to the worried parents of students stranded abroad with respect to the strategy and timeline of their evacuation. It seems that the BJP government is in active mode for foreigners and in deep slumber for Indian students”, Shergill alleged.
