Jalandhar, February 1

Congress MLAs and leaders today handed over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal on the issue of illegal mining in some villages of the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly constituency.

MLAs Pargat Singh, Hardev S Laddi Sherowalia and Avtar Henry, District Congress Committee chief Rajinder Beri and sarpanches of some villages met the DC apprising him of illegal mining along the Chitti Bein rivulet.

The leaders said some mining smugglers, backed by Aam Aadmi Party, were going to a depth of 30-35 ft endangering environment, ecology, public safety, norms and principles.

They said an area of 10-15 acres in Jamsher and Khera villages, 10-12 acres in Diwali village, three acres in Cholang and two acres in Bhode Saprai village was being dug up beyond the permissible jurisdiction. The leaders sought registration of FIRs against the suspects who have endangered the lives of villagers.

Sarpanches Gurpal of Jandiali village, Sukhvir of Kukarpind and Gurmeet of Cholang village also accompanied the MLAs. DC Sarangal sought a week’s time from the leaders to visit the site and make investigations into the allegations.
