The traffic police headed by Inspector Aman Kumar conducted a road safety awareness programme near the bus stand in Phagwara.
Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti made those present at the workshop aware of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 along with amendments made to it since September 2019, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and Motor Vehicle Driving Regulations, 2017.
Bhatti said awareness regarding traffic rules should be created among the people, especially the youth. Traffic rules should be followed strictly to prevent mishaps, she added.
Traffic in-charge Aman Kumar spoke about the importance of wearing proper safety headgear (helmet), affixing of reflective tapes on helmets for visibility during the night to other vehicles, importance of wearing a seat belt, impact of mobile phone usage with ear plug upon pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers, impact of drunken driving, importance and impact of lane driving and how to change lane, importance of rear view mirror and rear view side mirrors and mirror check after indicator and before turning left/right or changing lane, unnecessary honking and its effect, importance of pedestrian zebra crossing, impact of driving by juveniles etc.
The traffic police officials advised people to switch off the engine of their vehicles when they stop at red light for environmental safety and give way to emergency vehicles like ambulance, fire brigade and police
(PCR) cars.
